What can we do to help the Environment? Even though we might understand sustainability issues really well; we might find it quite hard to make it applicable in our daily lives. Let’s start with small things, then.
1. Minimizing the use of Plastic Bag. It’s really common when u shop in groceries store and the cashier guy/girl offers u plastic bag to ease your tiny little burden, such as a pen or a pair of Alkaline AA Batteries. As u know, those things are really, really simple to put in your pocket so u don’t have to use their plastic bags. Some store (in our country) doesn’t have awareness to this issue, or they simply just don’t know what the ‘eco-friendly’ is all about. Just explain it to them. Can u?
2. Use smart Water Dispenser Sometimes u don’t want to drink cold water, nor have a hot instant coffee because u only get thirsty and need a glass of water in normal temperature. So u need the third option beside ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ water to be dispensed. However, we often don't have this ‘third option,’ thus u end up mixing both (hot and cold) in your glass and waste a lot of energy. As u know, it takes about 10 Watt-hour to boil half glass of water and 10 Watt-hour to chill it out.
3. Try not to draw map in a blank white new paper when someone ask for your address, and never write your phone number on it. Just find another used paper, please.
4. Try using Public Transport Despite of the inconvenience, public transport in our city is still more efficient than using personal car. Especially when u only need to make one trip in a day (home-office or home-school). Mass transport is important for energy efficiency in urban transportation system, because it could save 90% fossil fuels usage.
5. Washing clothes with less (sufficient) detergent. By doing it, you use water more efficiently.
6. Use grey water. Water generated from our domestic activities such as laundry, dishwashing and bathing can be reused. Use it for carwashing, for example.
7. Manage your trash bin. Divide garbage in two boxes; for things that can be recycled and for organic trash.
8. Persuade our kids to love their poor old dolls. Or force them, if it’s necessary. It will reduce demand of plastic-made products.
Of course there are a lot of (small) things u can start by your own ideas, you name it. be wise, help the environment.
